Curcumin and Boswellia serrata in Osteoarthritis A Randomized Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial
Phytotherapy Research, 2014
A standardized Boswellia serrata extract delivering 333 mg of trunk bark oleogum resin extract per capsule, standardized to 40% boswellic acids (133 mg per capsule) a 4:1 concentrate equivalent to 1,333 mg of raw resin (QCE 1.333 g).
Boswellia serrata is a moderate to large branching tree native to the dry mountainous regions of India (family Burseraceae), known in Ayurvedic medicine as Shallaki. Its trunk bark produces an oleogum resin that has been used for centuries for joint and inflammatory health support. The resin is the source of boswellic acids a family of pentacyclic triterpene acids that are the primary bioactive compounds in Boswellia serrata extract.
The most pharmacologically active boswellic acid is acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA), which inhibits 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) the enzyme that converts arachidonic acid to leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are pro-inflammatory lipid mediators that contribute to joint inflammation and swelling. By inhibiting 5-LOX, boswellic acids reduce leukotriene synthesis and support a healthy inflammatory response in joint tissue. This mechanism is distinct from NSAIDs (which inhibit COX enzymes), making Boswellia a complementary option for joint health support.
Raw Boswellia resin varies significantly in boswellic acid content depending on the tree, harvest season, and processing method. Standardization to 40% boswellic acids means every batch is tested and verified to contain at least 40% boswellic acids by weight ensuring consistent potency and reproducible results. Each capsule contains approximately 133 mg of boswellic acids. Per daily dose of 3 capsules: approximately 999 mg extract and 399 mg boswellic acids.
The Health Canada licensed duration of use for this formula is a minimum of 2 months to see beneficial effects. Boswellia serrata is not a fast acting analgesic it works over time with consistent daily use. At 3 capsules per day, 90 capsules provides a 30-day supply. A minimum of 2 bottles is required to complete the licensed 2-month trial period.
