Evening primrose oil and treatment of premenstrual syndrome
Reviews in Pure and Applied Pharmacological Sciences, 1983
1000mg of certified organic evening primrose oil per softgel. Cold pressed from Oenothera biennis seed. Standardized to 100mg GLA. No heat. No solvents. No fillers.
Health Canada licensed NPN 80141539. Made in Canada. 120 softgels, 60 day supply.
A single ingredient, cold pressed evening primrose seed oil supplement in a bovine gelatin softgel.
Each softgel contains 1000mg of certified organic Oenothera biennis seed oil with a fully disclosed fatty acid profile: 100mg GLA, approximately 720mg linoleic acid, and approximately 80mg oleic acid.
The bovine gelatin shell is oxygen-impermeable, protecting GLA from oxidative degradation throughout shelf life. Contains bovine gelatin. Not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.
Licensed by Health Canada under NPN 80141539. Manufactured in Canada to GMP standards.
GLA is produced from dietary linoleic acid through the delta-6-desaturase enzyme. This step is consistently impaired by aging, elevated cortisol, insulin resistance, alcohol, and hormonal changes.
When delta-6-desaturase is underperforming, linoleic acid accumulates without converting to GLA. Evening primrose oil delivers GLA directly, bypassing this enzymatic bottleneck entirely.
Absorbed GLA is elongated to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). DGLA is the direct substrate for prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) via cyclooxygenase-1.
PGE1 is a vasodilatory, platelet-inhibiting, and anti-inflammatory eicosanoid that regulates vascular tone, immune signalling, and reproductive tissue responses. Because DGLA is preferentially channelled toward PGE1 rather than pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid, GLA supplementation produces a net anti-inflammatory effect.
Conventional seed oil production uses hexane at elevated temperatures. This oxidizes GLA, destroys tocopherols, and may leave trace solvent residues.
Cold pressing applies mechanical pressure at low temperatures with no heat and no chemicals. The result is a complete oil that retains its native fatty acid profile, antioxidant content, and phytosterol fraction.
GLA and linoleic acid are lipophilic and readily accumulate fat-soluble contaminants including organochlorine pesticides. Certified organic seed eliminates this pathway entirely.
Evening primrose oil naturally contains 8 to 10% GLA, but this varies with seed genetics and harvest conditions. A non-standardized 1000mg softgel may deliver as little as 80mg GLA.
This formulation guarantees a minimum of 100mg GLA per softgel across every batch.
Non-medicinal ingredients: Gelatin (bovine, softgel shell), glycerin, purified water.
Adults: Take 2 softgels, 1 time per day, with a meal containing dietary fat.
Dietary fat stimulates bile secretion, which is required for emulsification and lymphatic absorption of the oil. Ask a healthcare practitioner for use beyond 12 weeks.
Do not use if you have a seizure disorder or are taking phenothiazine medications.
Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a diagnosed health condition, or are taking prescription medications including anticoagulants.
Stop use and consult a healthcare practitioner if headache, nausea, or loose stools occur.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat. Keep bottle tightly sealed. Do not use if the seal is broken or missing. Keep out of reach of children.
