Clinical Research

Vinegar intake reduces body weight, body fat mass, and serum triglyceride levels in obese Japanese subjects

Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 2009

This randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial investigated the effects of daily vinegar intake on body weight, body fat mass, and metabolic parameters in 175 obese Japanese adults over a 12-week period. Participants were randomized to receive 15ml vinegar (750mg acetic acid), 30ml vinegar (1,500mg acetic acid), or placebo daily as part of their regular diet. Both vinegar groups demonstrated statistically significant reductions in body weight, body mass index (BMI), visceral fat area, waist circumference, and serum triglyceride levels compared to placebo at 12 weeks. The effects were dose dependent, with the 30ml group showing greater reductions than the 15ml group. Body weight returned toward baseline after discontinuation of vinegar intake, suggesting that continued supplementation is required to maintain the observed effects. The authors attributed the effects primarily to acetic acid, identifying it as the key bioactive compound responsible for the observed metabolic effects.

Green tea catechins and body weight management: a meta analysis of randomized controlled trials

International Journal of Obesity, 2009

This meta analysis pooled data from 11 randomized controlled trials examining the effects of green tea catechin supplementation on body weight and body composition in adults. Green tea catechin consumption, primarily EGCG, was associated with statistically significant reductions in body weight and body mass index compared to control conditions. The analysis found that habitual caffeine intake moderated the effect of green tea catechins on body weight suggesting that the combination of catechins and caffeine in green tea extract produces synergistic effects on body weight management that are greater than either compound alone. The authors concluded that green tea catechin supplementation, as part of a calorie reduced diet and exercise program, supports body weight management through complementary mechanisms including increased thermogenesis and fat oxidation.

Acetic acid supplementation reduces postprandial blood glucose and insulin responses in healthy adults: a randomized crossover trial

European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2005

This randomized crossover trial examined the effects of acetic acid (the primary bioactive compound in apple cider vinegar) on postprandial blood glucose and insulin responses in healthy adults following a standardized carbohydrate meal. Participants who consumed acetic acid with the meal demonstrated significantly lower postprandial blood glucose and insulin area under the curve (AUC) compared to the placebo condition, indicating that acetic acid attenuates the postprandial glycemic and insulinemic response to carbohydrate ingestion. The proposed mechanism is inhibition of disaccharidase activity in the intestinal wall, slowing the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and resulting in a more gradual postprandial glucose rise. The authors noted that the effect was most pronounced when acetic acid was consumed immediately before or with a carbohydrate containing meal consistent with the recommended dosing of this formula (1 capsule twice per day with a full glass of water before meals). These findings support the role of ACV's acetic acid content in supporting healthy metabolic function as part of a body weight management program.
