Krill Oil 500mg Per Softgel Phospholipid-Bound Omega-3 with Astaxanthin

Each serving of 2 softgels delivers 1,000mg of pure Antarctic krill oil (Euphausia superba, whole) providing EPA 135mg | DHA 60mg | Total Omega-3 250mg | Phospholipids 480mg | Esterified Astaxanthin 200mcg. Omega-3 fatty acids bound to phospholipids, not triglycerides.ย

The Phospholipid Difference

In fish oil, EPA and DHA are bound to triglycerides a three-fatty-acid glycerol ester that requires pancreatic lipase digestion before the omega-3s can be absorbed. In krill oil, EPA and DHA are predominantly bound to phospholipids the same class of amphiphilic lipid molecules that form the bilayer structure of human cell membranes. This formula provides 480mg of phospholipids per 2-softgel serving, including phosphatidylcholine as a source of dietary choline an essential nutrient involved in acetylcholine synthesis, liver fat metabolism, and one-carbon methylation pathways.

EPA and DHA

EPA (135mg per serving) is the primary omega-3 precursor to Series 3 prostaglandins and specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) including resolvins and protectins that support the resolution phase of the inflammatory response and healthy platelet function. DHA (60mg per serving) is the predominant structural fatty acid in neuronal cell membranes and the retina, where it supports membrane fluidity and the function of membrane-embedded proteins including rhodopsin and ion channels.

Astaxanthin

Esterified astaxanthin (200mcg per serving) is a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment accumulated by krill from the microalgae they consume. It is a potent lipophilic antioxidant incorporated into the krill oil matrix, protecting the polyunsaturated EPA and DHA from oxidative degradation during storage and contributing to the oxidative stability and low peroxide value of krill oil.

Antarctic Sourcing and Sustainability

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) inhabit the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. The Antarctic krill fishery is managed by CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources), which sets precautionary catch limits well below estimated sustainable yield and requires continuous monitoring of krill biomass and ecosystem impacts.

Clinical Research

Bioavailability of marine n-3 fatty acids from krill oil versus fish oil in healthy Norwegian volunteers

Lipids in Health and Disease, 2011 Randomized crossover study

A randomized crossover study comparing the bioavailability of EPA and DHA from krill oil (phospholipid-bound) versus fish oil (triglyceride-bound) in healthy volunteers. Krill oil and fish oil produced comparable plasma EPA and DHA levels, with krill oil achieving this at a lower total omega-3 dose, consistent with the phospholipid delivery form affecting the absorption and distribution of omega-3 fatty acids.

Krill oil supplementation lowers serum triglycerides without increasing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in adults with borderline high or high triglyceride levels

Nutrition Research, 2014 Randomized controlled trial

A randomized controlled trial evaluating the effect of krill oil supplementation on serum lipid profiles in adults with elevated triglycerides. Krill oil supplementation produced significant reductions in serum triglycerides and non-HDL cholesterol compared to placebo, supporting the cardiovascular health rationale for EPA and DHA supplementation from krill oil.

Astaxanthin as a natural antioxidant: an overview of the clinical evidence

Nutrients, 2020 Peer reviewed review

A review of the antioxidant properties and clinical evidence for astaxanthin, the naturally occurring carotenoid in krill oil. Astaxanthin is a potent lipophilic antioxidant that quenches singlet oxygen and scavenges free radicals in lipid-rich environments including cell membranes. In krill oil, esterified astaxanthin protects the highly polyunsaturated EPA and DHA from oxidative degradation, contributing to the oxidative stability of the oil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Antarctic Krill Oil used for?

Antarctic Krill Oil provides omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and astaxanthin to support heart health, brain function, joint comfort and antioxidant protection.

What are phospholipids and why do they matter?

Phospholipids are amphiphilic lipid molecules they have both a water-soluble head and a fat-soluble tail that form the bilayer structure of all human cell membranes. When omega-3 fatty acids are bound to phospholipids (as in krill oil), they are presented to the digestive system in a form structurally similar to the phospholipids already present in cell membranes. This formula provides 400mg of phospholipids per 1,000mg softgel, including phosphatidylcholine as a source of dietary choline.

What is astaxanthin and why is it in krill oil?

Esterified astaxanthin (200mcg per softgel) is a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment that gives krill their characteristic red-pink colour, accumulated from the microalgae they consume. Astaxanthin is a potent lipophilic antioxidant incorporated into the krill oil matrix, where it protects the highly polyunsaturated EPA and DHA from oxidative degradation during storage contributing to the oxidative stability and low peroxide value of krill oil. It also provides antioxidant activity in lipid-rich biological environments including cell membranes.

What does EPA do and what does DHA do?

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid, 150mg per softgel) is the primary omega-3 precursor to Series 3 prostaglandins and specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) including resolvins and protectins, which support the resolution phase of the inflammatory response and healthy platelet function. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, 70mg per softgel) is the predominant structural fatty acid in neuronal cell membranes and the retina, where it supports membrane fluidity and the function of membrane embedded proteins including rhodopsin and ion channels.

What is the difference between krill oil and fish oil?

The primary structural difference is the molecular form in which the omega-3 fatty acids are carried. In fish oil, EPA and DHA are bound to triglycerides, which require pancreatic lipase digestion before absorption. In krill oil, EPA and DHA are predominantly bound to phospholipids the same class of lipid molecules that form the bilayer structure of human cell membranes. This formula provides 400mg of phospholipids per softgel. The phospholipid content also provides phosphatidylcholine, a source of dietary choline involved in acetylcholine synthesis and liver fat metabolism.

Can people with shellfish allergies take krill oil?

No. Krill (Euphausia superba) are crustaceans the same biological class as shrimp, lobster, and crab. Hypersensitivity or allergy has been known to occur with shellfish. Do not use this product if you have a known shellfish allergy. Discontinue use immediately if any signs of hypersensitivity or allergic reaction occur and consult a healthcare practitioner.

Krill oil is health benificial

My doctor and parents used to recommend I use this consistently. It helps reduce inflammation and is small in size and easy to consume. I just started using this product recently; I will update here if not up to expectations.

Great supplement, no taste/aftertaste

Great way to get your omega. Small easy to swallow capsules that have no taste. Best part is that there is no after taste or burps that feel oily or fishy.

Nice

There's evidence that the omega-3 fatty acids in krill could potentially help your heart, lower your triglycerides, and increase HDL cholesterol. Also, krill oil contains antioxidants that might help battle free radicals, compounds associated with disease and aging. The benefits of krill oil vs. fish oil are nearly identical, but krill oil is more bioavailable, more sustainable, and less likely to be contaminated by mercury or heavy metals.Krill oil can slow blood clotting. It might increase the risk of bleeding in people with bleeding disorders. Some people who are allergic to seafood might also be allergic to krill oil supplements.Overall, a nice supplement for health. Easy to swallow. No bad aftertastes. No side effects.

Hard to compare against other Omega-3 sources.

Omega-3 from Krill is supposed to be more bioavailable (actually usable by your body, easily digestible) than other typical forms of Omega-3 so you apparently can't directly compare the amount of the Omega-3s in each capsule which just looking at the numbers seems pretty low. I'm going to have to give this the benefit of the doubt here because I honestly don't know any better. As this is a 30 day supply, it's definitely on the pricey side regardless but it's made in Canada so I at least trust that it's sourced and processed into a safe to take supplement and the heavy metals etc. have been properly removed (which as I understand it is a legitimate concern when supplements are sourced from bottom feeders). Apart from the unique sourcing, and somewhat smaller than typical capsule size, this seems very much like a typical good quality Omega 3 supplement.

Healthy easy to swallow krill oil capsules

Advanced Omega Antarctic 500mg Krill oil 60ct for $36.99.Expiry date was 2+ years away.I've been taking krill oil capsules for some years now , its one of my go to daily capsules. This bottle came with a good protective seal. The capsules themselves dont have really any taste and are small and should be extremely easy to swallow for your average person. They are very similar to exactly the same as other krill oil pills I've taken. In my last picture I have a single krill oil capsule which is from a bottle of Jamieson 500mg krill oil and beside it a bunch of these Advanced Omega 500mg krill oil and as you can see they look the same.Overall these capsules seem good but a bit on the more pricey side.

A Lot of Supplements in a Low Dose SoftGel

I take The Omega 3 for Dry Eye syndrome.Antarctic Pure Krill Oil has a much lower amount of my doctorโ€™s recommended dose of EPA and DHA. I would have to take 7-8 softgels a day to equal the amount.Antarctic Krill Oil does have other supplements:Astaxanthin is purported to be an antioxidant, possibly protecting cells from damage and improving the immune system.Phospholipids help cell structure and there is a lot of reading to do. Suffice it to say โ€“ your body produces it and it is good for you.I am going to try the dosage recommended on the bottle for 3 weeks to see if there is a change in my eyes. I will update if there are changes. From Mayo Clinic: โ€œResearch studies looking into the benefits of omega-3 fatty acid supplements have found fewer dry eye symptoms in people who take the supplement. It appears that omega-3 fatty acids can improve the eyeโ€™s oil film thatโ€™s produced by small glands on the edge of the eyelid, called the meibomian glands. That improves dry eye symptoms and reduces the need for artificial tears.โ€

Better source for Omega 3

Small gel cap is easy to swallow. Really good source of Omega 3. Krill are very small fish and so they are less contaminated with mercury than the bigger Cod fish which is normally sourced for Omega 3. For quite some time I have been taking triple strength Omega 3 from our local pharmacy. Because I was concerned about mercury I decided to spring for Krill oil even though it's a bit pricier. However, in the long run I think it's more economical because even though the dha/epa is less than what I was taking before, I'm getting the same benefit of keeping anxiety at bay and helping with stiff joints. And no fish burps at all. Definitely recommend these as a better way to get Omega 3. Also nice that this is made in Canada.
