What Is Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C)?

Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) is a phytochemical naturally found in cruciferous vegetables of the Brassica family, including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, and bok choy. It is formed when glucobrassicin, a glucosinolate compound in these vegetables, is hydrolyzed by the enzyme myrosinase upon cutting, chewing, or cooking. Supplemental I3C provides a concentrated, consistent dose of this phytochemical.

When I3C reaches the acidic environment of the stomach, it undergoes acid-catalyzed condensation reactions to form diindolylmethane (DIM) and other bioactive indole compounds. DIM is considered the primary active metabolite of I3C.
