L-Glutathione in this formula is produced by microbial fermentation, the same biosynthetic process used to produce pharmaceutical grade amino acids and vitamins. Yeast or bacterial strains are fermented under controlled conditions to biosynthesize glutathione, which is then purified to 99% pharmaceutical grade purity. 

Fermentation derived glutathione is chemically identical to the glutathione produced endogenously in every human cell. It is not derived from animal sources and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

What Is Glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids: glutamate (glutamic acid), cysteine, and glycine. It is synthesized in every cell of the body and is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in the human body. The liver has the highest glutathione concentration of any organ, reflecting its central role in detoxification. Glutathione works as an antioxidant by donating electrons from the thiol group on its cysteine residue to neutralize free radicals. When oxidized, it becomes GSSG (two glutathione molecules joined together), which is then converted back to active GSH by glutathione reductase, allowing continuous recycling.

What Is the Difference Between Reduced Glutathione (GSH) and Oxidized Glutathione (GSSG)?

Reduced glutathione (GSH) has a free thiol group (SH) on its cysteine residue. This thiol group is the active site that donates electrons to neutralize free radicals, making GSH the biologically active antioxidant form. Oxidized glutathione (GSSG) is formed when two GSH molecules each donate an electron and join together. GSSG must be converted back to GSH by glutathione reductase before it can act as an antioxidant again. This formula provides glutathione exclusively in the reduced GSH form, the active antioxidant state.

How It Works

The GSH/GSSG Redox Cycle

Glutathione functions through a continuous redox cycle. GSH donates an electron from its cysteine thiol group to neutralize a free radical, becoming oxidized to GSSG. Glutathione reductase then uses NADPH to reduce GSSG back to two molecules of GSH, restoring antioxidant capacity. This cycle allows glutathione to be continuously recycled and reused, making it one of the most efficient antioxidant systems in the body. Supplemental GSH replenishes the pool available for this cycle.

Glutathione as the Master Intracellular Antioxidant

Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant inside cells, operating in the aqueous (cytoplasmic) environment where many oxidative reactions occur. It directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species, and it regenerates other antioxidants: GSH reduces the oxidized forms of vitamin C and vitamin E, restoring their antioxidant activity.
