Psyllium husk is the outer seed coat of Plantago ovata, an annual herb native to India and Pakistan — also known as ispaghula or isabgol. It is cultivated primarily in the Gujarat and Rajasthan states of India, which produce the majority of the world's psyllium supply. The husk is separated from the seed by milling and is approximately 70% soluble dietary fibre, primarily a polysaccharide called arabinoxylan.
This high soluble fibre content is what gives psyllium its bulk-forming laxative properties and distinguishes it from insoluble fibre sources such as wheat bran. Psyllium husk has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is one of the most extensively studied natural bulk-forming laxatives.
When psyllium husk powder is mixed with water, the soluble arabinoxylan fibre absorbs water and swells to form a viscous, gel-like mass. This gel increases the bulk and water content of the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. The increased bulk also stimulates peristalsis — the wave-like muscle contractions that move contents through the intestine promoting regular bowel movements.
Unlike stimulant laxatives (which force the intestine to contract) or osmotic laxatives (which draw water into the intestine), bulk-forming laxatives work by physically increasing stool volume and softness. This is why psyllium is described as providing gentle relief of constipation and irregularity. Effects are typically observed 12 to 24 hours after the first dose and may take 2 to 3 days of consistent use to achieve full effect.
The gel-forming property of psyllium requires water to work. If psyllium powder is taken without sufficient liquid, it can begin to swell before reaching the stomach creating a risk of choking or oesophageal obstruction. Always mix psyllium husk powder thoroughly with at least 240ml (8 oz) of water or other fluid and drink immediately. Follow with an additional glass of water.
Consult a healthcare practitioner immediately if you experience chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing after taking this product these are signs of possible oesophageal obstruction requiring immediate medical attention.
Yes. Psyllium husk is almost entirely soluble dietary fibre. Dietary fibre does not raise blood glucose and is excluded from net carbohydrate calculations in ketogenic and low carbohydrate diets. This product contains no added sugars, starches, or other carbohydrates — zero non-medicinal ingredients. Suitable for ketogenic and low carbohydrate diets.
Non-medicinal ingredients: None. 100% pure psyllium husk powder zero additives, fillers, flavours, or sweeteners.
Adults and adolescents 13 years and older: Mix 2 teaspoons (8,000mg) with at least 240ml (8 oz) of water, milk, fruit juice, or similar aqueous beverage. Stir briskly and drink immediately. Follow with an additional glass of water. Take once per day after dinner. Effects typically observed 12 to 24 hours after first dose; may take 2 to 3 days of consistent use. Take at least 2 hours before or after other medications. Consult a healthcare practitioner if laxative effect does not occur within 7 days.
Always take with at least 240ml (8 oz) of liquid. Taking without adequate fluid may cause choking.
Contraindications — Do not use if: experiencing a sudden change in bowel habits persisting more than 2 weeks; experiencing undiagnosed rectal bleeding; failed to defecate following another laxative; have diabetes mellitus in which blood sugar is difficult to regulate; have difficulty swallowing.
Consult a healthcare practitioner immediately if chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing occurs after taking. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if you have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever, or are taking medications that inhibit peristaltic movement. Hypersensitivity/allergy has been known to occur following inhaled or ingested psyllium discontinue use if this occurs. May cause temporary gas and/or bloating. Keep out of reach of children.
