TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is a taurine conjugated bile salt a naturally occurring component of human bile acid physiology. Bile salts are synthesized in the liver from cholesterol, conjugated with taurine or glycine, and secreted into bile for fat emulsification. After fat absorption, approximately 95% of bile salts are reabsorbed from the terminal ileum and returned to the liver via the enterohepatic circulation, completing the cycle. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) alleviates endoplasmic reticulum stress and prevents hepatocyte apoptosis in a mouse model of non alcoholic fatty liver disease
