Acai berry (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) fruit extract, 100:1 200 mg per capsule, equivalent to 20,000 mg of raw acai berry (QCE). Acai is an anthocyanin rich palm fruit native to the Amazon rainforest of Brazil and among the most antioxidant-dense fruits studied. The 100:1 concentration ratio delivers a high density of anthocyanins and polyphenols per capsule by concentrating the bioactive compounds and removing inert plant material.
Acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) is a palm tree in the Arecaceae family native to the floodplain forests of the Amazon basin in Brazil and other parts of tropical South America. Its small, dark purple berries grow in large clusters near the top of the palm and have been harvested by Indigenous Amazonian communities for centuries as a staple food and traditional medicine. Acai berries are among the most antioxidant dense fruits measured, with a high concentration of anthocyanins the flavonoid pigments responsible for the deep purple colour along with other polyphenols including proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids.
A 100:1 extract ratio means 100 g of raw dried acai berry fruit is processed to produce 1 g of concentrated extract. Each 200 mg capsule is therefore equivalent to 20,000 mg (20 g) of raw acai berry, expressed as QCE Quantity of Crude Equivalent, the Health Canada standard for expressing the raw herb equivalent of a concentrated herbal extract. Because fresh acai berries are highly perishable, they are processed into concentrated extract shortly after harvest to preserve their phytochemical content. The concentration process removes water, fibre, and inert plant material, retaining and concentrating the anthocyanins and polyphenols responsible for acai’s antioxidant activity.
