Acetyl-L-carnitine improves aged brain function
Geriatrics & Gerontology International, 2010
Each vegan capsule delivers 637.5 mg of Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) from 750 mg of Acetyl L-Carnitine HCl. ALCAR is the acetylated form of L-carnitine the acetyl group allows it to cross the blood brain barrier efficiently and donate to acetylcholine synthesis, distinguishing it from standard L-carnitine. At the recommended dose of 3 capsules per day, this formula delivers 1,912.5 mg of ALCAR daily.
Standard L-carnitine supports peripheral energy metabolism by transporting long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation and ATP production. ALCAR does this too, but additionally crosses the blood-brain barrier and donates its acetyl group to choline via choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) to form acetylcholine the primary neurotransmitter of the cholinergic system, essential for attention, learning, and memory. Standard L-carnitine does not cross the blood brain barrier efficiently and cannot contribute to acetylcholine synthesis.
Carnitine is essential for mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation. Long chain fatty acids cannot cross the inner mitochondrial membrane without carnitine. They are transferred to carnitine by CPT-I, cross the membrane as acylcarnitine, and are released for beta oxidation generating acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH2 for ATP production. This pathway is the primary energy source for the heart and a major energy source for skeletal muscle during sustained activity.
Once inside the brain, ALCAR supports neuronal mitochondrial function and donates its acetyl group for acetylcholine synthesis. Neurons have exceptionally high energy demands ALCAR addresses both the neurotransmitter and energy supply sides of cognitive function.
ALCAR HCl is the preferred form for capsule manufacturing more stable than free-base ALCAR. Each 750 mg of ALCAR HCl provides 637.5 mg of free base Acetyl L-Carnitine (85% free-base equivalent), the biologically active amount stated as the medicinal ingredient per capsule in accordance with Health Canada NHP labelling. Source: synthetically produced ALCAR HCl. Not derived from animal sources. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
