Vitamin K2 (MK-7) Supplementation and Bone Density and Cardiovascular Health in Postmenopausal Women

Osteoporosis International, 2013

Three year randomized controlled trial examining the effects of daily MK-7 (180mcg) supplementation on bone mineral density and arterial stiffness in healthy postmenopausal women. MK-7 supplementation significantly improved vitamin K status and activated osteocalcin the protein responsible for binding calcium into bone matrix. Bone mineral density and bone strength were significantly better preserved in the MK-7 group compared to placebo. Arterial stiffness, a cardiovascular risk marker, was also significantly reduced in the MK-7 group, consistent with MK-7's role in activating Matrix Gla Protein (MGP) to prevent arterial calcification. This study provides the primary evidence basis for including Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone-7, 50mcg per capsule) in this Women's 50+ formula.

Calcium and Vitamin D Supplementation and Bone Health in Postmenopausal Women: A Meta Analysis

Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, 2016

Meta analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluating the combined effect of calcium and vitamin D supplementation on bone mineral density and fracture risk in postmenopausal women. Calcium supplementation alone modestly reduced bone loss, while the combination of calcium and vitamin D3 produced significantly greater improvements in bone mineral density at the hip and spine. The analysis supports calcium intakes of 1,000–1,200mg daily for postmenopausal women, with vitamin D3 at 600 800 IU daily to optimize calcium absorption. Citrate forms of calcium were found to be better absorbed than carbonate, particularly in older women with reduced stomach acid. Provides the evidence basis for the elevated Calcium (100mg per capsule / 200mg per serving as Calcium Citrate) and Vitamin D3 (300 IU per capsule / 600 IU per serving) in this Women's 50+ formula.

Choline Intake and Cognitive Function in Aging: Evidence from Observational and Intervention Studies

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2019

Review examining the relationship between choline intake and cognitive function in older adults, with a focus on women. Choline is a precursor to acetylcholine the primary neurotransmitter involved in memory and learning and is essential for cell membrane integrity and liver fat metabolism. Studies found that higher choline intake was associated with better cognitive performance and reduced risk of cognitive decline in older women. Many older adults have suboptimal choline intake, as dietary sources (eggs, liver, fish) may be limited. Inositol, a related compound, supports cell signalling and works synergistically with choline in phospholipid metabolism. L-Methionine contributes to the methylation cycle that supports choline synthesis. Provides the evidence basis for including the lipotropic trio of Choline 25mg, Inositol 10mg, and L-Methionine 10mg in this Women's 50+ formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Multivitamin for Women 50+ used for?

Multivitamin for Women 50+ is formulated to help support the nutritional needs of women over 50, including energy metabolism, immune function, bone health, and overall wellness.

How does this Women's 50+ Multivitamin differ from the standard Women's Multivitamin?

This formula is specifically adjusted for the nutritional needs of women after age 50, with several key upgrades: Vitamin K2 (MK-7) 50mcg is added for bone and cardiovascular health not present in the standard formula. Calcium is doubled to 100mg per capsule (200mg per serving) to reflect increased post menopausal needs. Vitamin D3 is increased to 300 IU per capsule (600 IU per serving) to support calcium absorption. Vitamin E is elevated to 75 IU per capsule for enhanced antioxidant protection. Selenium (Selenomethionine) is increased to 50mcg per capsule vs. 30mcg. Lutein is increased to 7.5mg per capsule vs. 5mg. Three additional bioactives are included: Choline 25mg, L-Methionine 10mg, and Inositol 10mg a lipotropic trio supporting liver health, fat metabolism, and cognitive function. The total formula provides 28 nutrients per capsule vs. 26 in the standard Women's formula.

Why should women over 50 take a multivitamin?

Nutritional needs can change with age. A women’s 50+ multivitamin can help supplement the diet with important vitamins and minerals needed for healthy aging and everyday wellness.

Why does this Women's 50+ formula have more Calcium and Vitamin D3 than a standard multivitamin?

After menopause, estrogen levels decline significantly, which accelerates bone loss. Women can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the first 5–7 years after menopause, dramatically increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Calcium is the primary structural mineral in bone, and requirements increase with age as intestinal absorption efficiency declines. This formula provides 100mg of Calcium per capsule (200mg per daily serving of 2 capsules) as a blend of Calcium Citrate, Calcium Ascorbate, and Calcium Silicate all well absorbed forms. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is essential for calcium absorption in the intestines and is provided at 300 IU per capsule (600 IU per serving). Vitamin K2 (MK-7, 50mcg) works alongside Calcium and D3 to direct calcium into bones rather than arteries. This trio Calcium + D3 + K2 represents the evidence based approach to bone health support for post-menopausal women.

When is the best time to take Multivitamin for Women 50+?

A multivitamin is generally best taken with a meal, which may improve tolerance and help with the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins D and K.

Is this Women's 50+ Multivitamin safe to take with medications?

This formula contains Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone-7), which can interact with blood thinning medications such as warfarin (Coumadin) and other anticoagulants. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if you are taking blood thinners. Additionally, consult a healthcare practitioner before use if you have a history of non melanoma skin cancer. As with any supplement, inform your healthcare provider about all supplements you are taking, particularly if you are on medications for heart conditions, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, or diabetes, as some nutrients in this formula (including Vitamin D3, Magnesium, Chromium, and Selenium) may interact with certain medications or affect lab test results. Take 2 hours apart from other medications or natural health products as a general precaution.
