Frequently Asked Questions

What is Canadian chaga tea grind?

Canadian chaga tea grind is whole dried chaga (Inonotus obliquus, mycelia) in coarsely ground pebble form, wild harvested by hand from the birch forests of Northern Quebec. Unlike chaga extracts or capsules, the tea grind uses no extraction process all naturally occurring bioactive compounds are present in the ratios in which they exist in wild chaga. It is prepared as a traditional slow-brew tea: 3g per cup, simmered for 15 to 20 minutes. Each 160g container provides approximately 53 servings.

How do you brew chaga tea grind?

Add approximately 3g (one teaspoon) of chaga tea grind to 500ml to 1 litre of water. Bring to a gentle simmer do not boil vigorously; keep below 70°C / 160°F to preserve heat-sensitive compounds. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or longer for a stronger brew. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. The resulting tea has a deep amber to dark brown colour with an earthy, mildly bitter, slightly vanilla like flavour. Strained grounds can be refrigerated and reused for 2 to 3 additional brews within 2 to 3 days.

What does "immunomodulating" mean on a chaga supplement?

Immunomodulating means supporting the normal function and balance of the immune system distinct from simply stimulating or suppressing it. The primary bioactive compounds responsible for this Health Canada licensed use are chaga's fungal polysaccharides, particularly beta-glucans. Beta-glucans are recognized by pattern recognition receptors (Dectin-1 and TLR2) on immune cells including macrophages, dendritic cells, and NK cells, activating signalling pathways that support normal immune cell function.

Why does wild harvested chaga from Northern Quebec matter?

Wild chaga growing on living birch trees accumulates betulinic acid and betulin from the birch host triterpenoids unique to wild birch grown chaga that are absent in laboratory cultivated chaga grown on grain substrates. Northern Quebec's boreal birch forests are among Canada's most pristine environments. Wild harvested chaga has a full spectrum bioactive profile including the melanin polyphenol complex, beta glucans, and birch derived triterpenoids that cannot be replicated in cultivation.

Who should not drink chaga tea?

Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking anticoagulant medications (e.g. warfarin), taking medications for diabetes, or have an autoimmune condition or kidney disease. Chaga contains oxalates individuals with a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones should consult a healthcare practitioner before use. Chaga may have mild anticoagulant properties. Keep out of reach of children. Consult a healthcare practitioner for prolonged use.
