Chitosan as a dietary supplement for weight loss: a systematic review
Obesity Reviews, 2008
Each capsule contains 500mg of high-purity chitosan standardized to minimum 95% deacetylated chitin, sourced from North American shrimp shells. A natural fiber-like substance that binds to dietary fats in the digestive system before they can be absorbed. Supports healthy weight management and helps maintain cholesterol levels already within the normal range when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
Adults: Take with meals containing dietary fat, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. Drink plenty of water when taking chitosan. Take at least 2 hours before or after medications and fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
Not suitable for individuals with shellfish allergies. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are taking medications. Take at least 2 hours before or after medications and fat-soluble vitamins.
Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide derived from chitin, found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans such as shrimp. Through a process called deacetylation, chitin is converted into chitosan creating a positively charged fiber like substance with the unique ability to bind to negatively charged dietary fats and bile acids in the digestive system.
Chitosan carries a positive charge due to its deacetylated structure. Dietary fats and bile acids carry negative charges. When chitosan encounters fats in the digestive system, the opposite charges attract, causing chitosan to bind to the fats before they can be fully absorbed. The chitosan-fat complex is too large to be absorbed through the intestinal wall and is eliminated from the body.
Chitosan also binds bile acids in the intestine. Bile acids are produced by the liver from cholesterol and are normally reabsorbed and recycled. When bile acids are bound by chitosan and excreted, the liver uses more cholesterol from the bloodstream to produce new bile acids which is the basis for chitosan’s cholesterol support use.
The degree of deacetylation determines how many positive charges the chitosan molecule carries and therefore how effectively it can bind to negatively charged fats and bile acids. Chitosan standardized to minimum 95% deacetylated chitin is considered high-quality and ensures consistent fat-binding capacity in every capsule.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly sealed. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of reach of children.
Take at least 2 hours before or after medications and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), as chitosan may interfere with their absorption. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are taking medications. Use as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of children.
