Glucosamine sulfate use and delay of progression of knee osteoarthritis: a 3 year, randomized, placebo controlled, double blind study

This randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial followed patients with knee osteoarthritis over 3 years of daily glucosamine sulfate supplementation at 1,500mg per day. The study found that glucosamine sulfate significantly reduced joint pain scores compared to placebo and, critically, demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in joint space narrowing on X-ray a structural marker of cartilage deterioration.
