Effects of Pycnogenol on endothelial function in patients with stable coronary artery disease: a double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over study

European Heart Journal, 2012

Twenty three patients with stable coronary artery disease completed a trial comparing 200 mg daily of Pycnogenol with placebo over eight week treatment periods, alongside standard cardiovascular therapy. The extract improved flow mediated dilation, a measure of blood vessel function, and reduced a measured oxidative-stress marker. Blood pressure and inflammatory markers did not significantly change. This small study does not establish prevention of cardiovascular events

Oral Pycnogenol® Intake Benefits the Skin in Urban Chinese Outdoor Workers: A Randomized, Placebo Controlled, Double Blind, and Crossover Intervention Study

This randomized, double blind, placebo controlled crossover study examined 76 outdoor workers in Beijing taking 100 mg daily of Pycnogenol during a 12-week intervention. Supplementation helped maintain skin hydration and limit moisture loss and skin darkening during the dry autumn season. Skin elasticity measures also improved. Findings apply to the studied extract and environmental conditions, not directly to a 450 mg generic extract.

Cellular pharmacodynamic effects of Pycnogenol® in patients with severe osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled pilot study

Thirty three patients awaiting knee replacement were assigned to receive 200 mg daily of Pycnogenol or no treatment for three weeks before surgery. The supplemented group showed reductions in several cartilage degradation and inflammatory markers in collected tissue and blood samples. This exploratory study investigated biological mechanisms, rather than demonstrating pain relief or cartilage repair, and did not use a placebo control.
