What Is Glutamine?

Glutamine is an amino acid and plays many roles in the body: immune function, intestinal health, and muscle function. L-Glutamine is considered a semi-essential amino acid, which means the body can make it when there is enough present.

L-glutamine is found in foods and supplements. Even though our body naturally produces it, you still need additional L-glutamine in certain health conditions, particularly those that result in muscle wasting.

Foods Sources of Glutamine:

You can find Glutamine in foods such as beef, egg, milk, corn or white rice. However, they contain varying amounts of protein/amino acids, and if you are following a dairy free diet, non-GMO foods or a vegetable lover, you may not consume enough Glutamine per day.

What are the roles of L-Glutamine?

1) Muscle cell

While most amino acids are processed in the liver, glutamine metabolizes in the muscle directly. Therefore, after intensive workouts or periods of physical stress, your body will require more glutamine to assist in muscle cell repair or restore plasma glutamine levels.

2) Digestive system health

Glutamine is crucial for a healthy intestinal mucosa and may help to heal or maintain a healthy gut. Several research studies have shown that even a small amount of glutamine administration relieves leaky gut syndrome or Crohn’s disease.

2) The immune system

Glutamine is considered the preferred energy source in the intestinal system. In some studies, it has been shown that glutamine protects and heals the ‘leaky gut’ and may prevent toxins and bad bacteria passing into the blood stream, which causes inflammation and increased immune responses.

While you are suffering from an illness or injury, your body may not be able to produce enough Glutamine. In these instances, consuming Glutamine supplements may help support immune system health.

When do you need Glutamine?

You are suffering from an illness or an injury.
You have digestive issues.
You do intensive workouts.
